The majestic Koggala Lake sits serene, off the coast of southern Sri Lanka - home to popular hotels and resorts.
Hidden away on the overgrown, cinnamon forested banks of this beautiful lagoon is Tri. Although we seem lost in an uninhabited jungle paradise and literally off the beaten track, Tri is a short tuk ride from the hip and happening cafe-culture hotspot of Ahangama, and Galle Fort; and just 15 minutes from the Expressway. So all the famed attractions of Sri Lanka’s beautiful south and beyond are within easy reach.
Getting to us at Tri is quite easy. We’re on Google maps, and the route off the main road is clearly marked and signposted throughout.
The lake that’s all around us is Koggala lagoon - one of Sri Lanka’s largest. On this eco paradise where two waters meet, there are eight little islands, mainly lush mangrove swamps rich in biodiversity. There’s an ancient temple on one, and traditional cinnamon farming on another, and lots of birds - endemics and migrants, on all of them.
Where the lagoon meets the sea is the small town of Koggala, boasting one of Sri Lanka’s longest beaches - uncrowded, except for lines of stilt fishermen offshore, quite an incredible sight at sunset.
The buzzing city of Galle is a quirky blend of then and now. A place much sought after from ancient days, legacies left by colonial rule still remain. The Dutch Fort - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. Its cobbled streets are lined with trendy cafes, chic boutiques and beautifully restored old buildings. The island’s new creative hub, the renowned Galle Literary Festival and other cultural events take place here.
World renowned for whale watching, the small village of Mirissa sits on a gorgeous crescent of beach.
Favourable ocean conditions off Mirissa draw the giant Blue whales, Bryde’s whales, sperm whales, killer whales and pilot whales. Four kinds of dolphins (spinner dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin, Risso’s dolphin) can also be spotted.
Mirissa has other attractions too: sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkelling and boating if you’re up for more action than whale watching.
The ultimate beach party destination, ‘Una’ is relatively quiet by day and comes alive at night, buzzing with life and music.
‘Una’ beach is busy with plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes as well as lots of activities from surfing, snorkelling, diving to yoga, and craft classes.
The sea is calm here. The protected double reef over the bay forms a perfect natural pool safe for swimming. The waters are also home to a rich diversity of marine life.
A small town on the South coast, Ahangama is famed for stilt fishing; a traditional method practised only in this region of Sri Lanka.
This coastal stretch has beautiful beaches such as Kathaluwa, Kabalana, and Midigama - all ideal surf spots. So it’s become quite a chilled hangout for tourists (and locals) with lots of cafes, bars and restaurants.
Other attractions include traditional crafts like masks and exquisite lace making, as well as several ancient Buddhist temples with unique murals.
The weather gods are generally friendly, sending typical tropical weather. Lots of blue skies and fluffy clouds; hot, sunny days with temperatures soaring to 30℃. The rains, when they do come (around May to September), bring renewal - making Tri even more lush, green and gorgeous.
While all roads may not lead to Tri, a few do. Take the scenic route by car, hop a bus or train to Koggala and brave a tuk ride, or be absolutely fabulous and fly into Koggala airport, and our boat will pick you up.
