Walk through a 400 year old gateway and enter the cosmopolitan hub of cultural cool down south. The ravages of time, colonial rule - even a tsunami, have not affected this 16th century marvel. Cobbled streets lined with quaint shops, chic cafes and giant trees, stunt divers leaping off ancient ramparts barely missing the rocks below, literary festivals drawing global authors and crowds of book lovers. Galle Fort was built in 1588 by the Portuguese; fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onwards.

the Flagrock bastion where the divers are.
