Discover traditional livelihoods: learn local pottery

Distance: 8 km from Tri
Duration: 2 hours

In rural Sri Lanka, pottery is still a vital livelihood. Visit a local master potter at Weligama, and at his workshop, watch and learn the intricate and arduous process of making earthenware - the mixing, moulding, drying and finishing. Try your hand at the wheel; make a keepsake to take back home. En route back to Tri, visit Kushtarajagala or ‘healing statue’ - a rock carving dating back to 6th Century AD, also stopping at a local fish market along the way.

“ …tried a turn on the pottery wheel, not as easy as it looks! Made myself a pretty little treasure though.”

Sri Lanka’s tradition of pottery dates back to 2nd Century BC.

Traditional pottery skills are passed down from one generation to the next.

Ancient techniques and tools are still used today.

Kushtarajagala has a 10 ft Buddha statue carved into the rockface.

Village fish markets are noisy, messy and chaotic - but worth visiting .
